RECREATION PRACTITIONERS MEETING

The South West District for Culture, Recreation and Sport is pleased to host a Recreation Practitioners Meeting. This meeting will allow for professionals in the recreation field to discuss issues that are relevant to them. This is a great opportunity to network with others as well as to share and learn new information related to the recreation profession. Sonja Dahlman will facilitate the meeting as well as provide summary notes of the meeting that will be distributed to those who attended the meeting.

Community Support Visits
The South West District for Culture, Recreation & Sport has numerous programs and resources to offer. We understand that information overload can be challenging to say the least, and speaking to a staff member is much easier than reading through and understanding everything that is sent to you.
SWDCRS staff would be please to attend your next recreation board meeting, or arrange a community meeting with you to share what we offer. Give our offices a call to make arrangements. We will bring the refreshments!

Community Initiated Partnership Program
Funding is available for member communities building developmental or educational initiatives. Priority areas include arts/culture, physical activity/wellness, sport development, capacity building, volunteer education, aboriginal participation and senior participation. Programs may be funded for up to $400 twice in each fiscal year.

Wellness Wagon
Wellness Wagon helps your community plan events for children, youth, adults, seniors, families or your entire community. South West District for Culture, Recreation and Sport will assist up to 10 communities to offer 4 Wellness Wagon programs between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012. SWDCRS will reimburse your recreation board for 4 program instructors at $30.00 for each minimum 2 hour program delivered and support a Wellness Wagon Coordinator at $15.00 per program delivered
Past events include yoga, chocolate making, build a bird house, make a willow basket, make up application, manicures, family day event, pedicures, crafts, card games, activity night, sport clinics, horseshoe clinic, sleigh rides, dance night, scavenger night, snowman making contest, painting class, carnival, fitness class, cooking clinic, quilting, story hour, movie night.

Aboriginal Community Sport Grant
The Aboriginal Community Sport Grant Program (ACSGP) provides greater sport participation and development opportunities for Aboriginal youth in Saskatchewan. The program will assist and support the implementation of organized community sport programs to increase sport opportunities for youth in the Aboriginal community, specifically in urban, rural, on-reserve, isolated and northern communities.

Special Event Play Leader
Play Leaders can plan, organize and deliver quality safe play activities for children in your community during a community special event such as rodeos, sport days, Canada Day and community birthdays. South West District for Culture, Recreation and Sport will fund one certified play leader for up to 4 hours, per community, per event. Play leaders can work with up to 15 children between the ages of 5-12 at a time.

Play Leader Workshop
SWDCRS is accepting applications to host the 2011 Play Leader Workshop to be held in June. To assist in operation costs of hosting this workshop, SWDCRS will provide $700.00 to the application that best meets the workshop needs.

Summer Play Patrol
South West District for Culture, Recreation and Sport will create employment opportunities for your youth. In partnership with your community and the SWDCRS Play Patrol Funding, a local play leader(s) will have a summer job and develop their leadership skills in your community. Children of your community will benefit with a variety of safe, affordable, summer activities to participate in.
SWDCRS will provide a play patrol mentor for your play leader(s) to assist your leader through the summer of programming and activities in your community. The mentor will attend up to 3 program events to assist, evaluate, and make recommendation to your play leader(s) during their play program, as required. The mentor is available to assist in setting up your summer program with your leader and your communities play patrol coordinator.

Equipment Request
South West District for Culture, Recreation and Sport offers several types of equipment for members to borrow for their own program use. We offer different size play parachutes, jumbo stacking cups, washer toss, ladder ball, soft tip sky darts and horseshoes.

Summer Sport Exposure Opportunities
Give the children and youth in your community something new to try this summer. The Summer Sport Exposure Opportunity is a chance for your community to host introductory workshops to fun activities and sports. Some of the possibilities include ultimate frisbee, water polo, diving, lacrosse, synchronized swimming or your own ideas.

Asset Media Challenge
Create a work of art that that promotes a positive message based on the 40 Developmental Assets and that is meaningful to youth. It can be a painting, drawing, photograph, video, song or even a radio announcement. All children and youth are eligible to enter. Teachers and parents can help with ideas and resources. Prizes include registration to The Helping Kids Thrive Conference, iPod Nanos and more.

Grant Writing Workshop
SWDCRS is responding to your request to provide help with grant writing. Grant writing can be intimidating, time consuming and a challenge for us all. We will offer a one day workshop to provide communities the opportunity to attend and learn the tricks of the trade, and how to get your application taken seriously. Member communities interested in hosting a workshop are encouraged to give us a call.

LEAP - Literacy, Education, Activity and Play
LEAP provides children from birth to age five with a strong foundation in literacy, physical activity and healthy eating. The program offers resources and training to support early learning specialists, caregivers and parents as they actively participate in children’s learning. We are looking for interested parents, caregivers or any individuals working with children age 5 & under.

Front line recreation, sport and after school leaders learn how to incorporate the Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (PHCD) into their everyday programming to children ages 6-12.

Take the Lead – Age Focus Grades 6, 7, 8
Take the Lead! promotes youth to plan, deliver and participate in regular active play programs. Adults within the community have an opportunity to become Leadership Coaches who support and assist the young leaders as they strive to provide healthy, developmentally appropriate and safe active play opportunities to lead other children.
Take the Lead will help your community, school or organization promote healthy active living during leisure time; increased youth leadership opportunities where youth take responsibility for planning, implementing and assessing play activities for their peers; and increased respect for and effective use of play space and equipment.

RAT Rural Asset Ticketing
It’s RAT season. Keep your eyes open for good deeds around town. RAT is a method of rewarding good deeds, positive behavior or actions in rural communities that pertain to cultural, recreation or sport activities that makes your community a better place to live, work and play. Community members acknowledge their neighbours, friends, or acquaintances for acts of kindness, courtesy, or good deeds. RAT on a neighbour, they could win a prize!

Volunteer Recognition
A volunteer is someone who gives time, energy and talents to others. Help us recognize volunteers in the South West District whose work in the areas of sport, culture or recreation is exemplary. Each member community is invited to submit three names for consideration in the categories of youth (under 21), senior, (55+) and individual. Two names from each category will be recognized at the Volunteer Recognition Event held in June.

Athlete Development – Saskatchewan Games
SWDCRS is providing opportunities this summer for south west Saskatchewan’s youth to learn and become proficient in Games sports that are not traditionally high profile. This is your community’s chance to offer Athlete Development opportunities this summer, and encourage the youth in your community to become involved in the Saskatchewan Games.
Give your youth a chance to experience archery, canoe/kayak, equestrian, soccer, tennis or triathlon.

National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is a coach training and certification program for 65 different sports and is offered across Canada. NCCP workshops are designed to meet the needs of all types of coaches, from the first-time coach to the head coach of a national team. The South West District for Culture, Recreation and Sport is looking for communities to host the Introduction to Competition Part A and Part B Coaching Clinics.
